Journalism in Education
Over the past couple of weeks, our Journalism class has discussed truth in Journalism. the public has to discern what is truth and what is "wikiality", or the idea that if enough people agree on something then it becomes the truth. There is so much information available for any audience, and there is so much that needs to be sorted through in order to get the truth. If we can't change the information that is produced by mass media, we can atleast educate future consumers in order to help readers decide what is worthy of their time. Through literacy and good communication, people can determine where to atleast search for truthfulness. As a hopeful future English teacher, it is my job to help readers analyze the content of what they are reading. Instead of being uneducated consumers of the media, I can help readers to be citizens and future contributers of the truth. Instruction through reading and writing will help produce accurate and truthful writers as well as intelligent and careful readers. It is through education that we can solve many social issues, and truthfulness in mass media is a social issue that needs change. By educating for the benefit of society, citizens of the news and mass communication will have the knowledge to be critical consumers and producers, and hopefully change the direction that our mass media has taken.
